Incident Procedure
If a service or work-related injury or illness requires professional medical assistance and is not lifethreatening, every effort must be made to notify the WisCorps staff supervisor or Director before obtaining this assistance.
Workers’ Compensation Insurance Information
- If a service-related injury results in medical care, please provide the following information to the hospital or clinic:

- If the participant is unable to work due to the injury/illness they can be covered by Lost Time through the insurance company that will pay a portion of the participants living allowance or wage for the duration of the lost time. If the participant continues to receive the weekly living allowance, they will not be compensated for lost time.
What is Covered?
- If a participant is injured during service hours, while performing position-related tasks, their medical costs may be eligible to be covered in full by Workers’ Compensation. Given the nature of WisCorps’ Crew Program, most incidents & injuries will be covered by Worker’s Compensation.
- If a participant would rather use their own personal health insurance, this is fine. Leaders will complete an incident report and follow the medical procedure below.
- Most common injuries resulting in medical treatment?
- Muscle aches and strains leading to carpal tunnel injuries
- Cuts from handsaws
- Pinched or smashed fingers
- Poison Ivy (allergic contact dermatitis)
- Bee stings
- Tick bites
- WisCorps recommends doxycycline within 72 hours of removal. This can handled at most urgent cares or clinics.
- Participant not wanting medical care will have to state that they are choosing to decline treatment
- What is not covered? Accidents that take place when someone is not serving hours!
- Member or Leaders who are injured while not wearing PPE during project hours
- Somone who is purposefully not following WisCorps field rules
- Non-crew recreation injuries (e.g. Running, working out)
Non-Medical Care
In the case of an injury that requires care in the field but does not require professional medical attention, Crew Leaders are responsible for administering first aid, monitoring the patient, and documenting the incident (see below).
- Address the immediate needs of your participant, ideally in a private setting.
- If necessary, perform first-aid.
- Request the following information from the participant:
- Time and place of accident/injury
- Description of accident/injury
- Anyone else involved with accident/injury
- Are they hoping to seek medical care?
- If necessary, perform first-aid.
- Continues Serving on Project?
- Keep checking in with the patient privately!
- Report accident/injury to a WisCorps staff supervisor within three days or during the end-of-week check-in, and complete WisCorps incident report by the end of the weekend (or non-project-days). You may need to request additional information from participant in order to complete incident report.
- Tick bite? Leaders are to contact their WisCorps staff supervisors by the end of the service day to next steps can be discussed.
- Missing Project Time?
- Report accident/injury/illness to a WisCorps staff supervisor by the end of the service day and complete incident report by the end of the weekend. You may need to request additional information from participant in order to complete incident report.
- Leaders need to report participants who miss 1+ hours of project service by the end of the service day.
- WisCorps staff may discuss alternative service activities to prevent further harm. (e.g. Light-duty tasks, camp organizing or cleaning, rest day)

- If participant’s accident/injury persists for multiple days, please capture a timeline in the incident report that highlights the accident/injury stages.
Medical Care
- Address the immediate medical needs of your injured participant. If the injury is serious, call 911. Perform first-aid.
- If the injury is minor, call WisCorps staff supervisor before transport to hospital/clinic. WisCorps will assist in making the next decisions.

- At NO time should a partial crew be left without a leader, vehicle or reliable communications!
- If feasible, one leader is to accompany the injured participant seeking medical care while the other remains with the crew.
- Project partner vehicles may serve as a WisCorps crew vehicle. If not feasible, the entire crew is to leave the service site together.

- If feasible, one leader is to accompany the injured participant seeking medical care while the other remains with the crew.
- After transport to hospital/clinic, provide WisCorps’ Workers Compensation Insurance information to physician or nurse (see above).
- The nearest hospital and or clinic will be listed within your crew’s project itinerary.

- When the injured participant is admitted and under medical supervision, call WisCorps staff supervisor to provide an update. WisCorps staff will review injury and discuss next steps. You will be asked to complete a Incident Report and you may need to seek additional information from the participant.
- Participant should request a written Return to Work Recommendation before leaving hospital/clinic! This paperwork should be photographed and emailed/texted/Slacked to WisCorps staff supervisor.
