Public Assistance – FoodShare

FoodShare is Wisconsin’s version of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP).

Most WisCorps AmeriCorps members are eligible to apply for food supplement programs like FoodShare/SNAP benefits, which help you cover monthly grocery expenses. In many cities, you can use those food benefits at grocery stores and local farmer’s markets.

This is the La Crosse phone number. Please use this one even if you are not in La Crosse County since this is where WisCorps is based, and they are more familiar with the program. You can also call them to ask questions about the application.

• U.S. citizenship or immigration status
• Job information
• Income information

Wisconsin Department of Human Services recommends that AmeriCorps Members obtain a personalized food stamp verification letter. You can email your WisCorps Supervisor for your personalized letter.

Things to keep in mind as you are applying:

• WisCorps is your employer on your ACCESS application
• While your living stipend will not be considered a “wage”, you still need to list it as income on the ACCESS application and select AmeriCorps as a paying job for it to be processed correctly
• Roommates are not considered part of your household for SNAP application purposes, but your family likely will
• Programs have different income limits and enrollment rules. The only way to truly know if you are eligible is to apply
• Typically, Members who have access to more than $5,000 of liquid assets (accessible funds or resources) are not eligible for benefits. Additional income outside of the AmeriCorps living stipend may also affect your eligibility
• It may be more challenging to apply if you are not a Wisconsin resident. Each state has their own program, but if you provide the address of where you are residing in Wisconsin that may work. You may need proof of residence like a lease or utility bill; please work with your Mentor to see if this is possible.
